Institute for Network Stimulation

Welcome to the website of the Institute for Network Stimulation - located at the Cologne University Medical Center. We are a scientific group interested in neuroimaging, method development, movement disorders and invasive brain stimulation.

Unser Ziel

The aim of our research is to analyze and modulate brain networks in order to improve the clinical treatment of neurological and psychiatric brain diseases. The primary tools we use to pursue these goals are structural imaging and non-invasive connectivity measurements derived from functional and diffusion-weighted MRI.

The professorship of Andreas Horn was established with the help of the Hermann and Lilly Schilling Foundation.

Brain network identified

Key for effective treatment of Parkinson's disease

"We want to improve the treatment of patients with neurological and psychiatric symptoms. To this end, we use causal sources of information, such as brain lesions and neuromodulatory interventions, to identify brain circuits that exhibit dysfunctional brain activity in the context of a specific disease and can subsequently lead to neurological or psychiatric symptoms. Neuromodulation therapies such as deep brain stimulation are used to alleviate the symptoms in order to precisely downregulate the affected circuits and thus restore balance in the brain. A strong focus of the new institute will be to make the research findings applicable to clinical practice."
